How many sessions you need is individual to each patient and depends on a number of factors for example what condition is being treated, how compliant you are to doing home exercise and your response to treatment.
Depending on where you are having the pain you may be required to remove some clothing so the therapists can see and touch the area of concern. The most important thing is you are comfortable and relaxed during treatment so if you are uncomfortable removing clothing we suggest shorts and a t-shirt which are ideal close fitting.
No! Most patients self refer although often a GP may suggest coming to see us to help with your pain.
Your Initial consultation will involve a case history. This is where the therapists asks about the issues you are having and goes through medical history to gain a thorough understanding of your problems. Following this an examination will take place which may involve observation, touch of the joints and muscles and seeing and feeling how areas are moving. From here a diagnosis will be reached and further treatment discussed.
The techniques used will depend on the diagnosis, severity of the problem, the state of the muscle and connective tissue stretching and massage, joint articulations and traction. Manipulation or high velocity thrust techniques which sometimes produce a ‘click’ are used to improve the movement at a joint that is restricted. The Osteopath may also include gentle techniques such as cranial osteopathy particularly when treating children or elderly patients.
